Sail Barbary - Evening Cocktail Cruise Maori Rock Carvings

Sail Barbary - Evening Cocktail Cruise Maori Rock Carvings

Overview

Evenings on Taupō feel different. The light softens, music drifts across the deck, and Mine Bay’s 14-metre Māori rock carvings glow against the cliffs. This is Sail Barbary at sunset, a little casual, a little party, and very Kiwi.

Bring your own food and drinks, Bluetooth your playlist to the surround-sound, and make the boat your lounge for the next 2.5 hours. If it’s warm, pack togs and a towel, swimming’s encouraged. Since 1982, Sail Barbary has been cruising to the Mine Bay carvings, only reachable by boat and in 2010 they swapped a noisy diesel for a clean, electric motor. No fumes, no roar. Just wind, water, and easy conversation about the lake’s eco story, life inside a volcano, and the cultural significance of the carvings.

We’ll take you right up close for those postcard photos, the kind that feel more like a moment than a shot. As one guest put it, “perfect, no noise, no diesel smell.” It’s simple, unique, and authentically Taupō.

  • Where: Mine Bay, Great Lake Taupō - carvings only accessible by boat
  • Operator: Sail Barbary (on the lake since 1982)
  • Sustainability: Converted to electric motor in 2010 (quiet, low-impact)
  • Experience: Close-up view of 14-metre Māori rock art, cultural & eco commentary, option to take the wheel/hoist sails

Sail Barbary Eco Tours

Sail Barbary Eco Tours

Sail Barbary made history by becoming New Zealand’s first and only commercial electric yacht. It was a quiet shift with a powerful purpose. We believed a clean electric motor would not only protect the lake but also transform the experience for our guests. That belief still holds true today.  Our zero-emissions yacht glides silently across the volcanic waters of Lake Taupō, allowing you to soak up the scenery just as nature intended, calm, unpolluted and uninterrupted. It’s a peaceful, guilt-free way to explore this incredible place while supporting a future where adventure and care go hand in hand.

This experience is operated by Sail Barbary, a licensed and safety-accredited provider. Please review the key participation and safety requirements before booking:

If weather conditions or other safety or time constraints prevent sailing to a given area or swimming in the lake, don’t argue the point. The captain wants to provide you with the best experience possible and, within reason, cater to your every wish, but they are also ultimately responsible for your safety and the safety of the yacht.

On the lake, Mother Nature ensures that every trip is different. Each season of the year brings different conditions. Sometimes the sailing is easy, sometimes it rains, sometimes there’s not enough wind for us to use the sails and we use our quiet electric engine. But whichever way it happens it always works out great. Please note that you may be transferred to Kakariki where the weather is too inclement to sail - this way you will still enjoy the day and definitely make the Maori carvings.
