Sail Barbary - Day Cruise Maori Rock Carvings

Overview

There’s a hush that falls on Great Lake Taupō when the sails take the wind. The shoreline slips by, and Mine Bay’s 14-metre Māori rock carvings rise from the cliffs, bold, calm, and deeply tied to this place. With Sail Barbary, you don’t just see them; you arrive the quiet way.

On the lake since 1982, Sail Barbary chose a different path in 2010, swapping the old diesel for a clean, eco-friendly electric motor. No fumes. No roar. Just the soft push of water and a guide’s easy commentary on living within a volcano, the lake’s eco story, and the cultural significance of the carvings.

Out here you can BYO food and drinks (or use the onboard bar) because, honestly, it doesn’t get more Kiwi than sharing snacks on deck with the sun on your face. Take the wheel for a moment, help hoist a line, or kick back and watch the cliffs change colour. If the wind drops, the electric drive hums you along in near-silence; if it fills, you’re sailing, no salty spray, no outboards, just you and the lake. Warm ponchos are on hand, and when it’s safe and the weather plays nice, a swim is encouraged.

  • Where: Mine Bay, Great Lake Taupō - carvings only accessible by boat
  • Operator: Sail Barbary (on the lake since 1982)
  • Sustainability: Converted to electric motor in 2010 (quiet, low-impact)
  • Experience: Close-up view of 14-metre Māori rock art, cultural & eco commentary, option to take the wheel/hoist sail

You’ll come right up close to the carvings, the sort of distance that turns a photo into a memory. As one guest said, “being at the carvings with no noise or diesel smell is perfect.” We agree.

Sail Barbary Eco Tours

Sail Barbary Eco Tours

Sail Barbary made history by becoming New Zealand’s first and only commercial electric yacht. It was a quiet shift with a powerful purpose. We believed a clean electric motor would not only protect the lake but also transform the experience for our guests. That belief still holds true today.  Our zero-emissions yacht glides silently across the volcanic waters of Lake Taupō, allowing you to soak up the scenery just as nature intended, calm, unpolluted and uninterrupted. It’s a peaceful, guilt-free way to explore this incredible place while supporting a future where adventure and care go hand in hand.

This experience is operated by Sail Barbary, a licensed and safety-accredited provider. Please review the key participation and safety requirements before booking:

If weather conditions or other safety or time constraints prevent sailing to a given area or swimming in the lake, don’t argue the point. The captain wants to provide you with the best experience possible and, within reason, cater to your every wish, but they are also ultimately responsible for your safety and the safety of the yacht.

On the lake, Mother Nature ensures that every trip is different. Each season of the year brings different conditions. Sometimes the sailing is easy, sometimes it rains, sometimes there’s not enough wind for us to use the sails and we use our quiet electric engine. But whichever way it happens it always works out great. Please note that you may be transferred to Kakariki where the weather is too inclement to sail - this way you will still enjoy the day and definitely make the Maori carvings.
