Mitre Peak Cruises - Milford Sound Cruise & Milford Track

Signature Experience

Guided Milford Track Walk + Scenic Cruise

Overview

Few places capture New Zealand’s spirit like Milford Sound / Piopiotahi, a landscape where waterfalls tumble from sheer cliffs and mist drifts between ancient peaks. Our Milford Sound Day Walk & Cruise blends the best of both worlds: an intimate guided walk on the world-famous Milford Track and a tranquil two-hour cruise through the fiord itself.

The Milford Track Guided Walk

Your adventure begins at the Milford Sound terminal with a short boat ride across Deep Water Basin to Sandfly Point, the end of the Milford Track and the start of your guided journey. From here, you’ll follow a gentle path alongside the cascading Arthur River and serene Lake Ada, surrounded by lush native forest.

In a small group of no more than 12 travellers, your local nature guide brings the landscape to life, pointing out native birds, ancient beech trees, and the delicate mosses and ferns that define Fiordland’s rainforest. Along the way, learn about the area’s human heritage and the immense task of building this historic track.

Your destination: the breathtaking Giant’s Gate Falls, viewed from a swing bridge that offers the perfect vantage point for photos and quiet awe. After approximately 3½ hours, you return to the wharf for the second part of your journey, the cruise.

Relax Aboard Our Milford Sound Cruise

Step aboard one of our purpose-built vessels, designed for smaller groups (60 or 75 guests) and easy maneuvering so you can get closer to the action. As you sail the 16 km length of Milford Sound, past the majestic Mitre Peak, our skipper shares stories and insights about the region’s geology, wildlife, and Māori heritage.

Cruise past Lady Bowen Falls, Lion Mountain, Copper Point, Seal Rock, and Stirling Falls, feel the spray of Fairy Falls and breathe in the crisp alpine air. Keep watch for New Zealand fur seals, playful dolphins, and, in season, the rare Fiordland Crested Penguin.

We venture out to the Tasman Sea, retracing the route of the first sealers who entered the fiord centuries ago. Enjoy complimentary tea and coffee in the lounge or take to the open deck for unobstructed views, every direction a living postcard of Fiordland’s raw beauty.
