Kaitiaki Adventures - Mt Tarawera Volcanic Crater (Half Day)

Overview

Take on the Mt Tarawera Half Day Hike with Kaitiaki Adventures, a guided journey to one of Aotearoa’s most iconic volcanic peaks. This unforgettable experience leads you deep into the dramatic landscapes shaped by the 1886 eruption that transformed the Rotorua region and created Waimangu, the world’s youngest geothermal valley.

Traverse rugged volcanic terrain, explore vast craters, and stand atop the summit of Ruawāhia, the highest of the maunga’s three peaks. From here, breathtaking 360° views stretch across Rotorua’s lakes, the volcanic plateau and the Bay of Plenty.

But the Mt Tarawera hike is more than spectacular scenery, it’s a journey of connection. Guided by Kaitiaki Adventures, you’ll hear kōrero of the mountain’s cultural and spiritual significance to Ngāti Rangitihi, the iwi who hold mana whenua as kaitiaki (guardians) of Tarawera. These stories bring the landscape to life, revealing its deeper meaning and legacy.

For those seeking an extra thrill, there’s the rare opportunity to run down into the heart of the volcanic crater, an exhilarating moment few people in the world can claim.

Accessible for a wide range of ages and fitness levels, this half-day experience includes all transport and expert guidance. Whether you’re drawn to nature, culture, history or adventure, the Mt Tarawera Half Day Hike is an unmissable Rotorua experience that blends geology, Māori storytelling and adrenaline into one powerful journey.
