Kaitiaki Adventures - Mt Tarawera and Te Puia – Te Pō Guided Tour / Haka / Hāngi

Overview

The Mt Tarawera & Te Puia Combo is a full-day journey that weaves together sacred volcanic landscapes, Māori culture and Rotorua’s geothermal wonders,  an experience that moves from sunrise to nightfall.

Your day begins with a guided hikoi on Mt Tarawera, the maunga forever shaped by the 1886 eruption that buried the Pink and White Terraces and formed Waimangu, the world’s youngest geothermal valley. You’ll explore vast craters and rugged ridgelines before standing atop Ruawāhia, taking in sweeping views across the lakes and the Bay of Plenty. Throughout the hike, your guide shares kōrero of Tarawera’s cultural and spiritual significance to Ngāti Rangitihi, the iwi who hold kaitiakitanga over this treasured landscape. For those seeking an extra thrill, there’s the rare chance to run down into the heart of the crater.

Your journey continues at Te Puia, Rotorua’s premier cultural and geothermal centre. Witness the world-famous Pōhutu Geyser, bubbling mud pools and the artistry of the New Zealand Māori Arts & Crafts Institute, where traditional carving and weaving are kept alive.

As evening arrives, the Te Pō experience begins, an immersive cultural performance featuring waiata, kapa haka and the powerful haka, followed by a traditional hāngi feast cooked using geothermal steam.

Blending the heights of Mt Tarawera with the culture, storytelling and geothermal beauty of Te Puia, this combo delivers a Rotorua experience rich in connection, meaning and adventure.
