Discover Ōkārito, a remote coastal village where rainforest, wetlands, and open ocean meet, just 20 minutes from Franz Josef.

This guided nature experience takes you through one of New Zealand’s most diverse ecosystems, from estuaries and sea cliffs to native forest and bird-rich wetlands. With views stretching to Aoraki/Mt Cook, Mt Tasman, and the Franz Josef Glacier on clear days, the landscape is as expansive as it is ever-changing.

Led by knowledgeable local guides, the tour offers insight into the region’s gold mining history, early settlement, and thriving birdlife, including the rare white heron (kōtuku), along with kākāriki, kea, and a wide range of native species.

As part of the experience, you’ll visit the Ōkārito Native Plant Nursery and contribute to local restoration efforts by planting a native tree, leaving a lasting connection to the place.

• Cancellations made 12 hours or more before departure receive a full refund.
• Cancellations made within 12 hours of departure are non-refundable.
No-shows or late arrivals are charged in full.
• If the operator cancels due to weather, safety or operational reasons, you may reschedule or receive a full refund.
