Overview

A full-day canyoning experience designed for those wanting to go further, deeper into New Zealand’s wilderness and further outside their comfort zone.

Departing from Queenstown or Wānaka, the journey begins with a scenic drive into Mt Aspiring National Park, where alpine lakes and mountain landscapes set the tone before reaching the canyon. From here, step into a remote environment shaped by water and time, where waterfalls, rock formations, and crystal-clear pools define the experience.

Led by expert guides, you’ll abseil, climb, slide, and move through the canyon at a steady, supported pace. No prior experience is needed, but a moderate level of fitness and confidence in the water is essential.

What to expect

  • Full-day canyoning experience in Mt Aspiring National Park
  • Scenic transfer from Queenstown or Wānaka (1–2 hours each way)
  • Guided descent including abseils, climbs, slides, and jumps

Each experience on TrvlAtlas is operated by one of our trusted local operators. Because every operator’s conditions differ slightly, this tour follows the cancellation policy set by Canyoning New Zealand.

Canyoning New Zealand – Cancellation Policy
• Cancellations made 48 hours or more before departure receive a full refund.
• Cancellations made within 48 hours of departure are non-refundable.
No-shows or late arrivals are charged in full.
• If the operator cancels due to weather, safety or operational reasons, you may reschedule or receive a full refund.

To request a change or cancellation, please contact TrvlAtlas Support at support@trvlatlas.com. We’ll assist and coordinate with the operator in line with their policy.  Final approval of changes and refunds remain with the experience operator.

This experience is operated by Canyoning New Zealand, a licensed and safety-accredited provider. Please review the key participation and safety requirements before booking:

All cancellations must be made in writing via email & full payment is required at the time of booking.  Booking a ticket does not guarantee you to be a suitable participant. If you book a ticket and are found to be un-suitable all tickets are non-refundable within 48 hours of departure.

It is at the guide’s discretion to screen all participants to determine suitability requirements are met and that clients are physically able to participate.
Clients must be physically able to complete the activity in the allowed time duration.

Unsuitable people include and are not limited to those with severe heart conditions, severe back conditions, those who are pregnant and those that are under the influence of drugs and or alcohol.

If recovering from an injury or on medication it is advised that you seek medical advice on your suitability before commencing on a trip.
This activity requires all participants to have specific ability requirements that are location specific:
– Gibbston Valley Beginner Tours – Medium fitness, water confidence and English speaking.
– Glenorchy Paradise Beginner Tour – Medium fitness, water confidence and English speaking.
– Mt Aspiring Beginner Tour – Medium fitness, good swimming ability and English speaking.
– Queenstown Cliff Jumping Abseiling Beginner Tour – Medium fitness, good swimming ability and English speaking.
– Aspiring XXL Intermediate Tour – Medium fitness, good swimming ability in moving water (like the ocean), comfortability with heights and English speaking.
– Aspiring MAX Advanced Tour – High fitness, good swimming ability in moving water (like the ocean), comfortable with heights and moving around exposed edges and English speaking.

Where multiple tickets are purchased, any cancellations made within 48 hours of departure resulting in only 1 person now travelling from the multi purchased tickets, will result in cancellation of the trip with all tickets charged and not refundable.
Damage or loss to any equipment will be charged.
If the equipment is soiled a cleaning fee will be charged.
If clients do not cancel and simply do not show up, the booking will also be 100% charged.

Minimum numbers are required on every trip and Canyoning New Zealand reserves the right to cancel any trip when these numbers are not met.
Canyoning New Zealand reserves the right to cancel any trip due to weather, customers suitability and guiding ratios.
All customers must be well for travel, any customer seen to be unwell cannot travel and these tickets will not be refunded.

This activity holds age restrictions per location:
– Gibbston Valley Beginner Tours – age limits are 10 years minimum and 60 years maximum.
– Glenorchy Paradise Beginner Tour – age limits are 10 years minimum and 60 years maximum.
– Mt Aspiring Beginner Tour – age limits are 12 years minimum and 60 years maximum.
– Queenstown Cliff Jumping Abseiling Beginner Tour – age limits are 10 years minimum and 60 years maximum.
– Aspiring XXL Intermediate Tour – age limits are 16 years minimum and 60 years maximum.
– Aspiring MAX Advanced Tour – age limits are 16 years minimum and 60 years maximum.

All participants 16 years and under require their legal guardian to sign our risk acknowledgement form prior to travel or at check in.

All participants ages 10-14 years require a supervisor to accompany them on the trip aged 16 years or older.
Participants 14 years and under that wish to travel without a supervisor accompanying them require further screening from our reservations team before the departure date.

When booking in larger groups, we can’t guarantee you will be traveling as one group, this split is dependent on the days numbers and groups ability.
Time spent in the canyon is approximate and will vary depending on the group’s ability.

Photos either pre-purchased or brought on the day of departure are non-refundable after they have been emailed to you. Please make sure you view them on your tour so if you’re not happy with the quality, you can request a refund before they are emailed to you.

Risk Acknowledgement 

Your safety is our top priority at Canyoning New Zealand and we do everything we can to keep you safe during your canyoning adventures.

We hire only experienced guides so you’re being guided by professionals that understand the environment and have an intimate knowledge of the canyoning sport.  Guide training is preformed regularly in house and all Canyoning New Zealand staff are encouraged to gain our locally recognised New Zealand Outdoor Instructors Association (NZOIA) canyoning qualifications or international equivalent.

New Zealand high risk adventure activity operators are safety audited annually to some of the highest safety standards in the world.  Canyoning New Zealand is proud to be safety audit certified and WorkSafe New Zealand approved.

Part of our responsibility is to ensure all participants read and understand our “risk acknowledgement form” at the time of booking a ticket and prior to participating.  Please see this information below:

  • Canyoning is an adventure activity which carries the potential of involving risk of serious harm or death.
  • Clients should be aware that Canyoning New Zealand is safety audited to the highest adventure activity standard in New Zealand but cannot guarantee their safety.
  • I understand that all tickets have a 48 hours cancellation policy.
  • The trip is mentally and physically demanding and requires the client to be English Speaking, comfortable and confident with moving over uneven and possibly slippery terrain, being in the water and dealing with heights.

  • I will notify staff of any pre-existing injuries or medication that may be required during the trip.
  • Any major heart problems, severe back conditions or pregnancy and you are not permitted to go canyoning. If recovering from an injury or on medication it is advised that you seek medical advice before commencing a trip.
  • By signing this document I agree to follow the guide’s instructions and use all safety equipment provided.
  • I release Canyoning New Zealand and its management and staff for any claim against loss or damage of personal possessions or injury.
  • By signing this document I agree that damaging or soiling any equipment will incur a fee.
  • I expressly acknowledge that I shall have no claim against Allan Skene the owner of Lot 24 DP 453314 & SEC 4 SO 453313, Certificate of Title 583058 on any basis whatsoever relating to the access to and activities on.
  • Canyoning New Zealand reserves the right to cancel or modify any trip or to refuse to carry any persons for safety reasons.
